MENTORS
ÂNGELA FERREIRA

is a Portuguese artist, curator and researcher in the field of Contemporary Photography and Visual Culture. She holds a PhD in Visual Communication from University of Minho (Braga, Portugal) and Postdoc at School of Fine Arts at UFRJ (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) (2021), in transdisciplinary poetics and hybrid photography. She gained a Master’s degree in Photography School of Arts (Utrecht, Netherlands) and Law Degree (UM, Braga).
She is the co-founder of the Portuguese PhotoFestival Encontros da Imagem (2006), an International Photography Festival based in Braga, Portugal, in which she collaborated as an artistic director and curator.
She has taken contemporary photography throughout Europe, Asia and Latin American Countries, particularly in Brazil. Since 2017, she is a curatorial member of Photography Museum in Fortaleza, Brazil; she is currently the artistic director of the FotoFestival SOLAR. She works as an adjunct professor at School of Visual Arts and Cinema/ECATI, Lusofona in Lisbon, where she coordinates the post-graduation in Photobooks. She is the co-founder of the Digital Atlas of Photobooks in Portugal, a platform dedicated to reflection and critical thinking around Portuguese photobooks.
Based in Portugal and Brazil, Ângela is interested in visual story-telling and photobooks created with multiple layers and languages as well artists working on the intersection of photography and other media to include them in the European and Latin American Institutions.
HANNAH PERRINE MODE

Hannah Perrine Mode is an artist, educator, and designer working at the confluence of art and environmental science. Through making, teaching, and organizing, she harnesses creative practices to deepen human connection to Earth systems and foster intersectional approaches to climate justice. Incorporating place-based making and cross-disciplinary exchange.
Her artworks and installations explore geologic forces, stewardship, and memory-keeping. Hannah works extensively with environmental and outdoor organizations to develop curricula, create programming, and teach art as a method of research, experimentation, and communication.
She currently serves in faculty and leadership roles with the Juneau Icefield Research Program (Alaska and British Columbia) and Inspiring Girls* Expeditions (Alaska and New Zealand). She has previously worked with Chulengo Expeditions (Chile and Alaska), the International Arctic Science Committee (Iceland), Parks Canada, Alaska State Parks, Google, Vermont Studio Center, and Central Michigan University. Hannah has exhibited at museums and galleries around the country, in addition to creating large-scale permanent public artworks in the Bay Area.
She is the Design Director at Storyroot, a small communication studio specializing in environmental and social impact strategy. She holds an MFA in Visual Art from Mills College and a BS in Studio Art from Skidmore College. Hannah lives in Providence, RI and spends her summers in Alaska.

PHOTOBOOKS AND DOCUMENTARY NARRATIVE STORYTELLING

12 hours:
6 hours of conceptualization and sequential editing +
6 hours of executing a photobook.
Over two days, participants will immerse themselves in creative processes, constructing narratives through editorial projects culminating in books. This workshop is tailored for artists dedicated to visual storytelling via photography, exploring editing techniques and innovative pathways within the field. Guided by Ângela, a seasoned Portuguese artist and curator, attendees will craft their own photographic projects, receiving expert guidance through book creation, editing, and sequencing. Ângela will also share her vast editorial expertise, offering insights into the vibrant landscape of photobooks as powerful tools for storytelling. Additionally, participants will explore various editing and book construction methods, reflecting a resistance to modern demands.

CYANOTYPE
Hannah Perrine Mode
Cyanotype photography course that explores the cyanotype printmaking process, using an expansive array of methods – including using photographic negatives, man-made and natural materials, different surfaces (paper, fabric, etc), and both traditional and experimental techniques. The course will also include a collaborative group project that consists of individual prints sewn into a larger tapestry that may be kept and displayed by iMana Lab. Participants learn the basics as a platform to dive deeper into their personal interests and preferred methods, conceptualizing and executing their own final projects that incorporate the cyanotype method.

Who can participate in IMAF?
Basic demands for applicants:

Photographers and visual artists, who work in the field of photography and wish to acquire new knowledge / competences.

Have at least one long-term photography project or actively use photography in their social practice.

Excel in use of camera and subsequent image processing (if it is relevant for chosen workshop/s).

Can communicate in English.

Are at least 18 years old at the time of application.

On being chosen and participate in IMAF, they agree to use their photographs for the promotion of the iManaLAB and IMAF programme activities in digital and printed media, in media and on social networks.

Bring their laptops for image processing.
The used expressions (in masculine form) are used as neutral for all genders.

The participants must confirm their position by paying the advance payment in 5 days from receiving the notification.
Selection of participants
IMAF 2024 has a limited number of participants, namely 18. The participants are selected based on the quality of their application and portfolio.
Cancelation
In case of participant cancelation from their part: in case of cancelation up to 14 days before the workshop, 50% of their advance payment is returned; in case of cancelation less than 14 days before the workshop, the advance payment is not returned.
